We Would Love to Hear From You

Someone recently asked the question, Do you remember the first book you ever checked out from the library?

I thought about that for a while, and I don't remember my first book. I do remember a book that I checked out in the grade school library about three dachshunds. One of the dog's names was Cinnamon. It's the first book I remember loving. It was the first book that also brought me disappointment. When I went back to read it again, I couldn't find it. I scoured the book shelves and asked the school librarian if she could help me find the book again, no luck. She said I should look for something else to read. I still don't know what the book was though I can still remember where I thought it was shelved in the library. Maybe my disappointment is a bit of why I became a librarian. I love to help people find the book that brings back good memories, or the title that has just slipped their mind.

I would love to know about the first book you checked out from the library. Leave me a comment or send me an email.

I remember all the kids in my school fighting over who got to check out the Shel Silverstein books.

I love hunting down books for people too. I don't suppose you misremembered the name of the dog and the book you're looking for is Pumpkin, Ginger, and Spice by Margaret Otto? It's a juvenile chapter book about dogs belonging to a baker and they save her from a fire.

Thank you for sharing.

I think that you are probably right about teh book. I have requested it through interlibrary loan to see if it is the story I remember.

I distinctly remember the first book I loved checking out from the public library with my mom: Madeline by Ludwig Bemelmans. It was before I went to school. I read it over and over and then I was able to share that book when my daughter was young and she also read it over and over!

Thank you to Imaleopardlover for the book title. You were correct. The book was Pumpkin, Ginger, and Spice. I was able to borrow a copy from another library. Sadly my memory was better than the reality of the book. Oh well, it was fun to take a step back to my childhood and find that remembered story.
